On a mission to accelerate green fuels

MissionGreenFuels is a mission-driven partnership accelerating the development and deployment of green fuels for sectors where direct electrification is not enough.

MissionGreenFuels

A mission-driven partnership for green fuels

MissionGreenFuels is a mission-driven partnership dedicated to accelerating the development and deployment of sustainable green fuels for hard-to-abate sectors, such as shipping and aviation, where direct electrification is insufficient.

With a strong focus on innovation, collaboration, and impact across the green fuel value chain, MissionGreenFuels supports research, development, and demonstration projects that drive technological breakthroughs, improve regulatory frameworks, enhance community engagement, and strengthen Denmark’s position as a global frontrunner in sustainable fuel solutions.

By setting a clear direction and fostering collaboration between a wide variety of stakeholders incl. industry leaders, research institutions, and policymakers, MissionGreenFuels aims to contribute to reaching the Danish climate goals. Furthermore, the mission supports Danish research, innovation, growth, job creation, and export potential within the field of green fuels.

Why green fuels matter

Driving the transition beyond direct electrification

Green fuels are essential to decarbonising sectors where direct electrification is not enough. They also create broader value by strengthening energy security, supporting Danish innovation, and helping turn renewable resources into real-world solutions across the energy system.

Explore the Roadmap for green fuels

Decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors

Green fuels are critical for sectors such as shipping, aviation, and parts of the industry where direct electrification is not sufficient. They help enable the transition in areas that are among the hardest to decarbonise.

Replacing fossil fuels with renewable alternatives

Green fuels can replace fossil fuels by converting renewable electricity and sustainable bio-resources into fuels that work across existing and future energy systems. This makes them a key part of the transition from fossil dependence to cleaner energy solutions.

Strengthening energy security and resilience

By enabling fuels to be produced locally from wind, solar, and bio-resources, green fuels can reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels. This strengthens energy security and makes the energy system more resilient.

Creating growth, jobs, and export opportunities

Green fuels are not only a climate solution - they are also an industrial opportunity. By advancing innovation and scaling new solutions, Denmark can strengthen its position in research, job creation, and export of green fuel technologies and expertise.

On a mission

From funding to real-world impact

MissionGreenFuels translates strategic priorities into action by funding research and innovation projects across the green fuels value chain. Through public funding from the Danish research reserve through Innovation Fund Denmark, the mission invests in projects that support the MissionGreenFuels vision, our Northern Star: The integration of sustainable fuels in transport and industry before 2050.

Together, these projects form a strong and coordinated portfolio - spanning from early-stage research to demonstration and deployment.

MissionGreenFuels is more than a funding mechanism. It is a partnership where projects are not developed in isolation, but as part of a mission-driven collaboration where results, insights, and knowledge are shared across the portfolio and partnership.

By connecting partners and facilitating dialogue through events and activities, MissionGreenFuels helps accelerate progress - turning individual projects into collective impact.

Foundation and governance

A mission-driven partnership with a public foundation

MissionGreenFuels is one of four green government-supported InnoMissions funded through Innovation Fund Denmark and is led by a secretariat under Aalborg University in collaboration with the Danish Center for Energy Storage (DaCES) and Energy Cluster Denmark (ECD).

The InnoMissions are four national, government-supported partnerships established by Innovation Fund Denmark to accelerate research and innovation addressing key societal challenges. MissionGreenFuels is one of the four InnoMissions, alongside INNO-CCUS, AgriFoodTure, and Trace.

The InnoMissions are funded and coordinated by Innovation Fund Denmark, bringing together stakeholders across research, industry, and public authorities to drive systemic change through mission-driven collaboration. Read more about the InnoMissions at Innovation Fund Denmark's webiste

MissionGreenFuels was established as part of the Danish government’s strategy for mission-driven green research and innovation. The partnership builds on a roadmap first developed in 2021 and has since evolved into a coordinated platform for accelerating green fuels through collaboration, funding, and strategic direction.

MissionGreenFuels is funded through public investments from Innovation Fund Denmark, including funding from the Danish research reserve and the EU’s NextGenerationEU programme. These funds are allocated to research and innovation projects across the green fuels value chain.

MissionGreenFuels is governed by a Board of Directors, which sets the strategic direction for the partnership and oversees key decisions related to priorities, funding, and portfolio development. The Board ensures alignment with national climate goals and the overall mission.

The secretariat is responsible for the day-to-day operations of MissionGreenFuels. This includes managing funding calls, supporting project development, coordinating activities across the partnership, and ensuring implementation of the mission strategy.

The secretariat of MissionGreenFuels is anchored at Aalborg University, which acts as the legal and administrative host. As a public institution, Aalborg University ensures compliance with relevant legislation and provides the organisational framework for the partnership. The mission is operated in collaboration with the Danish Center for Energy Storage (DaCES) and Energy Cluster Denmark (ECD).

Project portfolio

With an overall goal to support the integration of sustainable fuels in transport and industry before 2025, MissionGreenFuels has established a project portfolio with projects across the green fuels value chain.
