Introducing the MissionGreenFuels Updated Roadmap 2024

The MissionGreenFuels partnership is proud to present this updated, consolidated and holistic national roadmap on the future for green fuels in transport and industry. The roadmap sets clear pathways and the guiding principles towards 2030 and 2050 supporting Denmark’s journey to a sustainable and decarbonized future contributing to the global energy transition.

An updated roadmap

Our roadmap outlines the technological advancements, infrastructure developments, systems integration, regulation and policy frameworks necessary to scale up the production to improve the competitiveness with conventional fossil-based fuels and integration of these fuels into the energy system. While research and innovation in technical and scientific matters remains essential, advancing citizen engagement, sustainability, and financial frameworks are equally critical to ensure a successful energy transition. These elements are all part of working mission-driven and building public support, ensuring regulatory compliance, and securing the necessary funding and investment into green fuel projects in Denmark and abroad.

By taking a holistic approach, this roadmap outlines clear priorities and actionable steps for green fuels stakeholders at both industry, research and political level along with engaging civil society. It aims to drive immediate actions and guide long-term strategies to position Denmark as a qualified leader in green fuels, contributing to growth, jobs, export and global climate goals.
Scaling green fuels production, integrating them into the current infrastructure and lowering the costs require innovation, collaboration, and coordinated action. These principles have guided the MissionGreenFuels partnership since its inception, with the initial roadmap launched in 2021 serving as a foundation for investing in key projects and building a unified collaboration across the entire green fuels value chain.

We believe our roadmap must be a living tool that sets an overall direction for the partnership and the development of green fuels in both the short and long term. At the same time it incorporates stakeholder perspectives and key research and data, ensuring it reflects the latest national and global developments. This flexible approach allows us to address immediate priorities while creating a foundation for broader inclusion over time. Our underlying strategy plays an important role in continuously refining and expanding the roadmap, enabling it to adapt to emerging challenges and opportunities. This interplay between the roadmap and our strategy ensures that we can adjust focus areas, integrate diverse perspectives, and maintain momentum in the green transition, while staying responsive to evolving global and national contexts.

We trust our updated roadmap provides a comprehensive framework addressing challenges impeding the widespread adoption of green fuels. Recognizing the national and international development in the areas of climate, energy, industry, and security, we anticipate periodic adjustments to the roadmap in the coming years to maintain its relevance and success.

The MissionGreenFuels roadmap 2024 is closely aligned with the Danish government’s research strategy, “Accelerating Future Green Solutions – A strengthened effort for green research, innovation and climate solutions” presented in October 2024 which also stress the urgency and ambition required to realize the energy transition and meeting our climate goals.

Looking ahead

The launch of the MissionGreenFuels roadmap 2024 marks our next step towards realising the mission. As we continue the work, we look forward to engaging with stakeholders across sectors to ensure the successful implementation of this roadmap. Together, we aim to deliver impacts that will contribute to Denmark’s position in sustainable energy solutions.

The importance of our roadmap

“Some innovations require more to become a reality – and these are often the ones with the greatest potential.
As a mission, our roadmap is our “compass.” We use the roadmap to navigate the coming years’ work of making green fuels sustainable – economically, socially, and technologically. The importance of our roadmap cannot be overstated, and I am pleased that we are now taking the next step in our mission’s development with a roadmap that enables us to build a bridge towards 2030. If we, as a partnership, rise to this ambitious challenge, Denmark can take a leading position on the international stage in green fuels – but this will require a focused effort from the entire value chain.
We have the right foundation: a broad and committed group of partners, strong support from industry associations, and (most importantly) solid, long-term backing from the political level – in other words, we are ready for lift-off

Søren Bjerregaard, Chair of the Board.

Why the roadmap matters in our mission

“In a mission-driven approach to research and innovation, it is essential to have a roadmap that bridges short-term and long-term goals.

The new Roadmap for MissionGreenFuels fully fulfils this purpose, as it not only highlights specific, project-oriented challenges but also outlines how solving these challenges can lead to the establishment and strengthening of Danish value chains“.

Jakob Stoustrup, Vice Chair of the Board.

Looking for the original roadmap from 2021?

Denmark adopted in 2020 an ambitious climate law with a target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 70 percent by 2030 and reach climate neutrality by 2050 – a target that has been advanced to 2045.

The Innovation Fund Denmark (IFD) requested early 2021 knowledge and information for a mission-driven research and innovation partnership on four green innomissions. This call for action was part of the Danish governments first strategy for investment into green research, technology and innovation setting a clear direction for realizing the climate law, the objectives, promoting growth and jobs and the green transition. In May 2021 a large partnership of 100 actors from the private and public sector presented a roadmap for green fuels in transport and industry towards 2030 and 2050.

The initiative was spearheaded by six universities AAU, AU, SDU, KU, CBS, DTU, Energy Cluster Denmark (ECD), the Danish Center for Energy Storage (DaCES) in partnership with the Danish Technological Institute, FORCE Technology, DBI and the Alexandra Institute, (RTO’s), Vestas and Topsoe. This joint response for a roadmap has been the basis for developing the MissionGreenFuels partnership. The roadmap defines the guiding principle and pathways ahead for the partnership and addresses the challenges of green fuels in a focused and coordinated way. The roadmap serves to align and guide research and innovation activities, and ensuring knowledge sharing that identifies and builds on synergies whilst avoiding lock-ins.
